Meet the Festival Team

So who runs a literary festival? I went in search of the things that make our 2011 team really tick, and this is what I found out.

Kadi Hughes 麒麟 – Festival Director

> What is your favourite book of 2010? – “Skippy Dies” by Paul Murray.

> What book would best describe you character? – “The Rosy Crucifixion” by Henry Miller.

> Where in the world have you been that you thought was paradise?Berlin.

> Do you have hidden talents? Which are they? Kazoo playing and free-style rap.

> What is your favourite drink?Americanos.

> If you were an animal, which animal would it be?A griffen.

> What was your dream profession when you were 10 years old?Astrophysicist.


Alex Pearson 阿莱克斯 – Managing Director

> In which setting do you most enjoy reading a good book?Up a mountain, inside or outside a tent

> Where in the world have you been that you thought was paradise?Lake Hovsgol.

> If you were an animal, which animal would it be?A lovable, slightly disheveled mutt.

> Which is your favourite fictional character? Where would you meet him, if you could?Darcy, rather predictably, and I would like to meet him towards the end of the book.

> What do you miss most about being a child?Taking a running jump off the top diving board without a care in the world.

> What is your funniest (Chinese-language) slip of your tongue?Perhaps when I called a very nice woman mad, instead of asking her for more pancakes.

Sharon Thiruchelvam 田栩灵 – Programme Manager

> What is your favourite book of 2010?Of non-Festival authors, C by Tom McCarthy.

> In which setting do you most like to read a good book?In bed or whilst travelling – I like being in motion and seeing things blur past from the corner of my eye.

> If you could choose to be somebody else for 24 hours and live their life, who would you be and what would you do during these 24 hours?A great cosmologist or astronomer.

> If you had a time machine that could take you back in time – which year/decade would you go to and why?To the the Belle Epoque – for the art, design and ideas.

> Where in the world have you been that you thought was paradise?The coast of Jaffna, northern Sri Lanka.

> If you were an animal, which animal would it be?I’d like to say a cheetah but in reality something more sedentary, like a koala.

> What is your favourite book of 2010? – “The Reluctant Fundamentalist” by Mohsin Hamid.

> What is the weirdest thing you have ever eaten?Crunchy bugs.

> When you were small which superhero did you like?He-Man and She-Ra from “By the Power of Greyskull”.

> If you had a time machine that could take you back in time – which year/decade would you go to and why?1955 – So I could hang with James Dean and Dennis Hopper.

> What was your dream profession when you were 10 years old? – Zoo keeper.

> Which is your favourite fictional character? Where would you meet her/him, if you could?Sookie Stackhouse. I would like to meet her in a bar in Louisiana to chat about werewolves.

> What is your favourite thing about the Bookworm?The Lending Library!


Amy Wang 王柳 – Media Liason

> What is your favourite song to wake up to?Anything by Faye Wong.

> When you were small which superhero did you like?Monkey King if he counts. He certainly has super power and is sort of a hero.

> What was your dream profession when you were 10 years old? A full-time writer.

> Which is your favourite fictional character? Where would you meet her/him, if you could?Scarlett O’Hara. In her room on the morning before she went to the ball at Twelve Oaks.

> What do you miss most about being a child?To be concerns-free.

> Which detail do you love most about the Bookworm? It has to be between the books and the worm.


Josh KernanSchool programme Coordinator

> What is your favourite book of 2010? – Solar by Ian McEwan.

> What book would best describe your character? – I know it’s not a novel or anything, but a cook book would describe me well. In particular, ‘The World of Street Food’ by Troth Wells. It presents all kinds of snacks and meals from all around the globe. Two of my passions are travelling and food, so this book combines these perfectly and sums me up pretty well.

> What is your favourite song to wake up to? – ‘To Build a Home’ by Cinematic Orchestra.

> When you were small which superhero did you like? I was a big fan of the X-Men comic books and cartoons. Beast was favourite character, because he was hard as nails, yet could also flex his intellectual muscles with a good book. Do you know he could write with both hands……. AND both feet?! Now how cool is that?!

> Is there anything you absolutely refuse to do under any circumstances? – Eat dog. Man’s best friend. Period.

> What is your favourite drink? Long Island Ice tea.

> What is your favourite word? Knuffle – it means hug in Dutch. Great word.

> Which detail do you love most about the Bookworm? The Whisky selection!

> In which setting do you most like to read a good book?- In bed.

> What is your favourite song to wake up to? – Love generation.

>Where in the world have you been that you thought was paradise?- Zhu hai.

> When you were small which superhero did you like? – Monkey.

> If you had a time machine that could take you back in time – which year/decade whould you go to and why? – I would like to go back to me being 20 year old and then to go to college again.

>What was your dream profession when you were 10 years old? A writer.

> What is your favourite word? Adorable.

> What is your favourite book of 2010? – “Odette Toulemonde” by E.E. Schmidt or “The Timetravellers Wife” by Audrey Niffenegger.

> What is your favourite song to wake up to? – “Vienna” by Billy Joel.

> When you were small which superhero did you like?I was very much into all Astrid Lindgren books. I think my favourite idol was Pippi Longstocking or maybe Bibi Blockberg (a little German witch).

> If you were an animal, which animal would it be?A fox or lynx.

> What was your dream profession when you were 10 years old?Circus acrobat.

> What is your funniest (Chinese-language) slip of your tongue?I once asked a waiter to kiss (请吻…) me rather than asking him a question (请问…). And I’m sure my lack of control of my tones has been the reason for numerous hidden smiles on sides of Chinese Native Speakers.

> What is your favourite word?Leidenschaft – it’s German and means passion, but probably much more than that.

> What do you love most about The Bookworm?Apart from all the hidden treasures on the bookshelves, the Piano and the people who jam on it.
