Wednesday, March 14, 8 pm | 60 RMB – purchase link

Film adaptations will be in the spotlight tonight as we examine how China’s history and culture provides a rich source of inspiration for film-makers. Murong will discuss the recent adaption of Happiness is Murder, which he adapted from a novel by Chen Xiwo, as part of a new Hong Kong-China joint venture established to create film adaptations of Chinese literature and bring China’s stories to a global audience. He will talk about the challenges of screenplay writing, literary adaptation and the experience of having his own novels filmed. The discussion will be moderated by Jessica Yeung, a Hong Kong-based actress and film academic, and Murong will be joined by Pema Tseden, acclaimed Tibetan director, and documentary-maker Mitchell Farkas, who will discuss the potential of the market, and consider how to tell stories that audiences from diverse backgrounds identify with.

This event will be consecutively translated in English and Chinese.
